The Akwa lbom State House of Assembly has called on Local Government Legislative Councils across the State to pass their councils’ 2020 budgets on or before June 30, 2020.

The call followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by Rt Hon. Nse Essien, member representing ONNA State constituency and the Deputy Chief Whip of the House on Wednesday.

Essien said it was with deep concern and dismay that the second quarter of the 2020 financial year would elapse with most Local Government Areas in the State yet to pass their annual budgets.

He stressed that governor Udom Emmanuel had directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies ( MDAs) of government to send in their estimates for 2021 budget.

The ONNA lawmaker stated that the functions and power of a Legislative Council according to the Akwa lbom State Local Government Administration Law, as amended in 2017 is Debating , Approving and amending the annual budget of the Council.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey referred the motion to the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to report back to the House within one month.

Another motion seeking the upgrade of infrastructures at Government Model Girls Secondary School, lkot Ekang, Abak LGA was raised by the member representing Abak State Constituency, Hon. Udeme Otong.

Otong said since the commissioning of the school in 2017 up till date, there has not been any additional thing done in the school in terms of facilities, infrastructure and equipment to enhance effective studies.

He noted that if the infrastructure upgrade is not attained within a short period of time, it will hinder the possibilities of the school being granted the permission to launch into the Senior Secondary class when new session commences by September, 2020.

The House resolved that the Akwa Ibom State Universal Education Board (AK-SUBEB), should embark on instant assessment of the school for infrastructure evaluation to ascertain the level of deficit and make recommendations to the State Government for urgent intervention.
