NSIT ATAI WOMEN, YOUTH, ELDERS JOIN CAMPAIGN AGAINST RAPE
Women, Youth and Elders of Nsit Atai LGA have joined the ongoing campaign in Akwa Ibom State to spread the message against rape and violence against women .
The campaign was led by the wife of the House member representing Nsit Atai State Constituency, Mrs Dorcas Mark Esset, today.
Leading the Campaign train from the 10 Wards of the LGA, Mrs Dorcas Esset said the outing is in solidarity with the State Government’s position against the vice in the society.
Addressing the Traditional Ruler Council (TRC) in the area, Mrs Esset said it is a criminal offence which attracts more stringent punishment of life imprisonment on any person guilty of the offence.
“The law is more severe now that any rapist will be made to face the full weight of the law and spend the rest of his/her life in prison.”
She called on the Elders of the area to take the message further into the interior villages; also pleaded they should not use their royal offices to cover rape cases as it is a serious offense before the law in the State and might cost their certificate.
As the ranking member of the Legislators Wives Association (LEWA), Mrs Esset called on parents and children to always speak out and not allow any rapist or rape case to be swept under carpet.
She urged the indigenes to always report any rape case to her or to organisations like; National Association of Women journalists (NAWOJ) Akwa Ibom Chapter; International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nigeria; Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Path Initiative (FEYReP) who will take up such cases and allow the law to take its course against the perpetrators.
The LEWA member went ahead to advise parents and victims of rape to overcome the fear and shame by reaching out to the bodies mentioned earlier which have joined the campaign in the State led by the wife of the Governor, Dr. (Mrs) Martha Udom Emmanuel.
She advised parents to always make the hospital their first point of call in the incident of rape where a medical report could ascertain the situation which will be presented to the security for further action.
Also, it is an error for any royal father to protect any rapist as they stand the risk of their Certificate being withdrawn.
Responding, the Paramount Ruler of Nsit Atai LGA, HRM (Edidem) Peter Effiong Okon promised to take the message to Elders in the LGA and sensitize them on the wordings of the law.
The Ag. Chairman of Nsit Atai, Hon Idorenyin Inyang while addressing the women said his entire cabinet is against rape and that they have joined the campaign against rape.
In the same vein, the wife of the Paramount Ruler, Obongawan Josephine Peter Okon; wife of the Political Leader of Nsit Atai, Mrs Cecilia-Oyo Bassey and wife of the Ag. Chairman of Nsit Atai LGA, Mrs Ofonime Idorenyin Inyang, who were part of the campaign train called on men and all stakeholders to join hands to fight the evil which has made the society unsafe for the young ones.
They also advised that the message against rape should be taken to churches to further impress the awareness upon the children.
