IBANGA ISINE, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER GOES INTO HIDING OVER THREAT TO LIFE
The life of an Investigative reporter from Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ibanga Isine who is also an editor of Next Edition investigative news website, is under serious threat since he embarked on investigative report to unraveled the Southern Kaduna massacre under the administration of the present Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.
According to reports trending on Facebook and Twitter, the Journalist is sending S.O.S call to Nigerian authorities to come to his rescue as lives of key sources linked to the investigative stories have been cut short soon after the series of the reports.
“Please tweet and share until I am free. I am Ibanga Isine. I am a journalist. I am not a criminal. I haven’t broken any law. Help!!!”
He went further to lament that there are clear indications that his phone lines are bugged as it comes up with light at night without prompting and calls do not end in day time except he switch-off the phone.
Sources alleged to have been linked to the report and gave explicit accounts on the ignoble role played by the Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, have died mysteriously.
According to RSF report, “A Head of district was murdered in his home. A lawyer and a former governor died suddenly. All of them had pointed out in Isine’s report the murky role played by the the state governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai in the intercommunal clashes
in which several hundred people have been killed in the past year.”
The last of the reports which is the fourth in the series of the untold story of Southern Kaduna massacre was published on Jan 23, 2021.
The head of RSF, Arnaud Froger called on Nigerian Government to take urgent steps to ensure that the life of the reporter is secured in his country to carry out his duties.
“In view of his important contribution in highlighting and reporting these massacres in order to bring them to an end, we ask the Nigerian authorities to guarantee his safety and to make every effort to allow him to carry out his work without fear of reprisals.”
Meanwhile, RSF also disclosed that attempts to get assurances from the Kaduna State Governor of the safety of the reporter was abortive as there was no response from the Governor’s end.
