HON LUKE ADVOCATES LICENSE FOR IBOM SEAPORT, REVAMP ALSCON
The Member representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, Hon. Onofiok Luke has pushed for the issuance of license for the operation of Ibom Deep Seaport and the resuscitation of Aluminium Smelter Company (ALSCON) in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State.
He made this known to media community in Akwa Ibom State during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom Chapter November Congress, yesterday.
The Federal Lawmaker disclosed his advocacy for the Federal Government to establish a division of Court of Appeal in the state so to relieve the stress of traveling to Calabar to demand for that level of judicial service due to the deplorable condition of the Calabar-Itu way; and to facilitate speedy dispensation of justice.
“Today, with this bipartisan approach to politics, I have advocated the granting of license for the operation of Ibom Deep Seaport, reviving of Aluminium Smelter Company in Ikot Abasi, creation of a division of the Court of Appeal in Uyo.
“On 29 October 2019 before the National Judicial Council, I advocated for a division of the Court of Appeal to be established in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State to save the volume of cases from Akwa Ibom taken to calabar in the face of the poor state of Calabar- Itu road.”
The former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, ceased the opportunity to reiterate his commitment and loyalty to PDP, noting the need to break political limits in legislative lobbying so to surmount hurdles while soliciting for support concerning matters of the state.
“What my critics don’t understand is that at the national level, bipartisan approach to governance is essential if not pivotal. Your ability to coalesce the various stakeholders regardless of party affiliations to drive home the interest of your Federal Constituency is a necessary survival instinct. You cannot be defining PDP/APC when there are pressing topical national issues seeking attention and legislations. Acknowledging this shouldn’t suddenly make you disloyal to your party.”
He also commended the leadership strides of Governor Udom Emmanuel which have repositioned the state to an enviable heights amongst comity of states.
Particularly, is the Ibom Air which according to Hon. Luke has made it easy for him to attend to legislative matters in Abuja and still come into the state the same day for other engagements without disrupting his schedule the next day in Federal Capital Territory (FCT, Abuja).
“Let me reaffirm my support and believe in the leadership of the Governor of our dear state, Mr Udom Emmanuel. As captain of team Akwa Ibom, His Excellency has done his best in the face of daunting challenges that confronts us. Leading a state like ours can be challenging. Just as the Bible admonishes us to pray for our leaders, we should continue to uphold him and his government in prayers.
“Let me commend the effort to the State Governor in birthing Ibom Air. I am speaking to you today as a great beneficiary of the ease of travel it has offered to me. Today I can leave Abuja in the morning and meet an appointment in Uyo same day and return back to Abuja and prepare for plenary the following day . In fact a good example is today. I left Abuja after attending to other pressing matters and still had the opportunity to board the next flight to Uyo to meet this engagement with the NUJ. I do not want to imagine what it would have been like for me working in Abuja and having to meet up with my numerous appointments in Uyo without Ibom Air. I commend the initiative of the state owned airline. We must all take pride in this glory. We must all accept that Ibom air symbolizes our pride and re-engineers our identity.”
Seizing the opportunity to list few of his achievements in the last 17 months as Federal Lawmaker, Hon. Luke said he has been driven by his campaign mantra for the seat, “A voice to speak and a heart to give back,” since inception in office.
He said he has lend his voice to ensure judicial system is improved and security boosted around the courts and to Judges so to motivate and give sense of security to court administrators.
“On the floor of the House, I have advocated several issues that will advance Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria. I have been a voice for improving the judicial system in the country. Worried by the slow pace of justice dispensation, I have championed the course of speedy dispensation of justice in Nigeria. In a manner of a motion I called for more Justices to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Today, more Justices have been appointed to the Supreme Court.
“I have spoken for the welfare of judicial officers and increased security around judges in the country. My believe is that, if these judges feel insecured or suffer kidnap like it was in the case of Justice Dogo, it will hamper justice delivery. These judges may be afraid to dispense justice.”
His advocacies also included; ‘proposed tax reforms to be in line with best practice so as not to overburden small businesses with taxation’; ‘to immortalise Dr. Stella Adadevoh who saved the country from Ebola pandemic.’
The Pioneer Speaker, Nigerian Youth Parliament said he has sponsored fourteen Bills and Four motions.
These include; National Institute for Electoral Studies (Establishment) Bill, 2019; Courts Sanctity (Preservation) Bill, 2020; Legislative House (Privileges and Powers) (Amendment) Bill, 2019; Court of Appeal (Amendment) Bill, 2020; Sheriffs and Civil Process (Amendment) Bill, 2020; Police (Amendment) Bill, 2020; Constitution Amendment (Elevation of Judges) Bill, 2020; Constitution Amendment (Traditional Rulers) Bill, 2020; Constitution Amendment (Railway) Bill, 2020; Constitution Amendment (State Police) Bill, 2020; Constitution Amendment (Maritime) Bill, 2020; Constitution Amendment (Elevation of Judges) Bill 2020; Limitation Period ( Freezing) Bill 2020; A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, CAP, C23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to provide for quick dispensation of justice and completion of criminal matters tried by the Judge of a High Court before his elevation to the Court of Appeal and for related matters.
Motions include; ‘A Call on Federal Republic Government to make Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) functional; ‘Urgent Need for the Federal Government to Postpone Sports Festival in Edo State and Other Large Gatherings’; ‘Urgent Need for Security Agencies to Ensure the Release of Hon. Justice Chioma Nwosu and Increase Security and Protection around Judicial Officers across Nigeria’; ‘Urgent Need for the Federal Government to appoint more Supreme Court Justices to expedite justice delivery in the country.’
However, the Leadership of NUJ and its members in Akwa Ibom State chapter, chaired by Cmd Amos Etuk, lauded the strides of the Federal Lawmaker and encouraged him in his future legislative gaits.
The media community in Akwa Ibom promised to continue in its objective reportage while maintaining its relationship with media friends.
High point of the meeting was the unveiling of the NUJ Standard Magazine by the Federal Lawmaker.
