CORONA VIRUS DELAYS LAGOS-IBADAN RAILWAY PROJECT – AMEACHI
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated that the ongoing construction work on the Lagos-Ibadan rail project has been put on hold due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 Coronavirus.
Amaechi stated this on Thursday, March 5, 2020, during a LIVE television programme on AIT (African Independent Television), Abuja.
He explained that Coronavirus has caused workers of the CCECC (China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation) who travelled for the Chinese Holiday not to resume work as the contractors handling the project are still in Asia under their Government’s directives.
“If not for Coronavirus, we would have finished the Lagos-Ibadan rail – although the project is nearly completed. The CCECC workers are still in China”, Amaechi maintained.
Recall that the Federal Government on several occasions has boasted that the rail project will be completed and officially opened for business by April this year.
However, railway projects like the Lagos-Calabar rail is still in contention whether the government of the day will be able to complete the project or not before the end of its tenure.
