AKHA PASSES STATE LOTTERY BOARD BILL
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill to establish Akwa Ibom State Lottery Board.
This formed part of the House deliberation during its plenary, Tuesday.
Presenting the report of the Finance and Appropriation Committee on the bill, the Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudoh said that the State will stand to benefit a lot with the establishment of the Board.
Part of the advantages of the Board according to the Committee Chairman include; facilitation and regulation of the operations of betting, gaming and conduct of lotteries within the State.
Also, the board will oversee registration, licensing and approval of activities which fall under the broad categories of gaming and lottery; as well as, audits and monitors compliance to ensure licensees operate within the terms of the licences.
Other positive pacts of the law will be to ensure detection and investigation of illegal gaming activities; and guarantee that gaming and lottery are conducted by the right people.
After consideration of the bill in the Committee of the Whole House and proper reconstitution of the House, the bill was passed into law for the establishment of the Board.
Meanwhile, the House has read for the first time the bill ‘for a law to make provisions for the collection of revenue from transportation of goods by roads to, in or from Akwa Ibom State and for a single haulage fees payable at the point of loading, and discharge of goods in the State and for other matters connected therewith.’
Also, a bill for a law to ‘establish the Akwa Ibom State Fiscal Responsibility Board for prudent management of the State’s Resources and ensure Greater Accountability and Transparency in fiscal operations and other matters connected therewith,’ was read the first time.
The Bills were committed to the House Committee on Ethics, Rules and Privileges for rescheduling.
The House has adjourned its plenary to Thursday, August 13, 2020 by 10am.
