AKHA ADVOCATES MARINE PATROLS IN AKWA IBOM RIVERINE COMMUNITIES

The Akwa lbom State House of Assembly has urged the Commissioner of Police as a matter of urgency to establish a marine base at Ikot Adakpan, Oku lboku to patrol the waterways in the state.

In a motion raised by Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem, member representing Itu State Constituency on the floor of the House on Thursday, June 18, 2020, the lawmaker maintained that communal conflicts have their roots deep in the history of Nigeria and have been experienced by many communities across the country ,which have resulted to destruction of lives and properties, hardship and woes among the people.

“The people of riverine communities of Oku lboku, Ayadehe, Mbiabo, Itu Clan in Itu Local Government Area and Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, have suffered loss of lives and destruction of their properties.

“This is as a result of the age long conflicts between Oku Iboku in Itu local government Area of Akwa Ibom State and neighbouring communities in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross Rivers state.”

Hon. Edidem said that several conflict resolutions have been deployed by the community leaders and the State Government to bring about a lasting solution to the conflicts between the people of Oku lboku and lkot Offiong so they could embrace peace, but to no avail.

He hinted that gunmen from Ikot Offiong continue to invade and attack the Oku Iboku communities through the waterways.

The lawmaker recalled that gunmen from Ikot Offiong had in October 2016 and 2017 invaded the Oku Iboku communities through the water and unleashed terror and mayhem on the people, using over 20 speedboats, killing in the process children, men and women as well as destroying their houses, farms. The waterways were littered with corpses.

Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem expressed displeasure over incessant attacks on fishermen, women, farmers, villages of Oku Iboku, Mbiabo and Ayadehe by the attackers.

He said that if there is no urgent step taken to address the issue by introducing marine patrol with gun boats to guard the waterways and the creeks from invasion of the gunmen from Ikot Offiong through the Western flank of the River , more lives would be lost in future attacks.
In his prayers, he urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to the affected communities to ameliorate their sufferings.

Meanwhile, the Speaker has commended the Lawmaker for raising the motion and referred it to the Joint Committees on Security, Youth, Sports, Boundary and Conflict Resolution.
